Enter the cold read. A cold read is a statement or question that makes a bold assumption about your conversation partner based on something they have said previously in the same conversation. It can follow logically from their previous statement, or it can just be a non-sequitur that you impose on them. It doesn’t really matter which way you decide to go – if you’re correct about the assumption you make, then you’re suddenly as perceptive as Sherlock Holmes and extremely insightful.
